Caramelized onions take any ordinary meal and enhance the depth of flavor and enjoyment to a whole new level. I’m salivating just thinking about it right now…

It’s really incredible that caramelized onions start out as regular old onions because the end result is so creamy and sweet that you’d think it came from an entirely different vegetable. The key, of course, is to properly caramelize by slowly cooking the onions until they are browned, tender and sweet. This takes patience and is fully worth the effort.

While I think that caramelized onions make an amazing addition to virtually any meal, or eaten on its own as a snack, here’s a list of 5 popular ways to serve ’em…

Serves 6

1 tablespoon olive oil

4 yellow onions, sliced

¼ teaspoon sea salt

In a skillet heat the olive oil over medium high heat. Add the onions to the pan. Cook for 5 minutes. Reduce to low heat.

Add the sea salt and coconut palm sugar. Continue to cook over low heat for about 30 minutes. If the onions start to stick to the pan, add a little bit of water and mix vigorously. Remove from heat once the onions reach the color and consistency that you desire. Enjoy!
