There are many reasons to avoid artificial food coloring and dyes, especially the infamous Red No. 40. For starters, Red No. 40 is derived from petroleum, and if that’s not enough to make you think twice, it’s also been linked to cancer, hyperactivity, and hives.

Creating a beautiful shade of red from beets is a fun and natural way to color your food. Sure, you’ll never achieve the fire engine red that artificial coloring will create, but you will have gorgeous, safe, and nutritious treats that you can really feel good about. Serves 1

3 beets

filtered water


Wash the beets, remove the stems and root end, and chop into bite sized pieces. Place in a small pot and cover with water.


Bring to a boil and then reduce to a simmer until only a few Tablespoons of vibrantly red water remains. Remove the beets (peel and enjoy!) and save the red beet water for your food coloring. Enjoy!
