Here’s the homemade BBQ sauce that I like to whip up. Since most store bought BBQ sauces contain refined sugar and HFCS, it’s nice to have this quick and wholesome option.
Making homemade ketchup is also quite easy. Here’s how: Rub 5 large tomatoes and 1 large, peeled red onion with olive oil. Grill until charred – I use a grill pan over medium high heat. Combine the charred tomatoes and onion in a food processor with 2 Tablespoons tomato paste, 2 Tablespoons apple cider vinegar, 1 packet stevia (or 3 Tablespoons coconut palm sugar), 1 Tablespoon Dijon mustard and 1 Tablespoon lemon juice. Optionally, add a seeded, grilled jalapeño and a handful of fresh cilantro. Bend until smooth.
- ⅔ cup coconut palm sugar
- 1⅓ cup natural ketchup (refined sugar free)
- ¼ cup plus 2 Tablespoons apple cider vinegar
- 1 Tablespoon plus 1 teaspoon Dijon mustard
- Combine all of the ingredients in a small pot. Simmer over low heat for 5 minutes, stirring often. Remove from heat and enjoy!
