Vacations are a time of fun, adventure and….weight gain.
Most people gain about a pound a day while on vacation.
But that doesn’t have to be you.
These vacation pounds are brought on by reckless eating. Decide right now that you will eat smart, and weight gain will not ruin your trip.
Here are 5 Vacation Eating Tips to help you keep the pounds away:
Tip #1: Cut Your Grains. Vacation days are notorious for carbohydrate rich meals, and these carbohydrates will quickly add up to unwanted pounds. Combat this fat-trap by choosing at least one meal per day to go carb-less.
- Breakfast: This may be the most effective meal to use the carb-less trick, since leisurely breakfasts often involve breads, pastries or pancakes. Skip the grains and fill up on egg whites and lean breakfast meats.
- Lunch: A great vacation lunch is a salad with lean meat. It’s so filling and satisfying that you won’t even miss the carbs. Beware of fattening dressings. Ask for some lemon juice or balsamic vinegar instead.
- Dinner: While on vacation you don’t want to feel deprived, so dinner becomes the hardest meal to go carb-less. But if you’ve indulged at breakfast and lunch then make it a point to cut the grains out of dinner. Stick with veggies, salads and lean meats.
**The best way to avoid vacation weight gain is to eat no grains at all. If you don’t want to cut them out completely, then stick with the above strategy of cutting them from one or two meals.**
Tip #2: Indulge Selectively. Eating out is mandatory while on vacation. Whether you’re enjoying 5 star restaurants or fast food diners, you will face the same problem: large portions. Of course the easiest thing to do with a large portioned meal is to simply eat it all – you are on vacation after all…right? – that is not a good idea. When you order your meal ask for a to-go box. Put half of your meal safely into the box before you even begin to eat. This makes it easier to eat a healthy portion. If you would rather not carry out a to-go box then ask that your entrée be made into a smaller portion. If it’s dinnertime ask for the lunch-sized entrée.
Tip #3: Do Not Eat Late. One of the easiest ways to prevent weight loss is to simply stop eating 3 hours before you go to bed. This is truly effective while on vacation. Skip that late night indulgence and wake up looking and feeling great.
Tip #4: Enjoy Healthy Snacks. Travel days create the perfect opportunity for snacking. A coffee and pastry before your flight, a bag of pretzels on the plane and then before you know it – it’s lunch time! A road trip is even worse. There are many opportunities for regrettable snacking…rest stop vending machines, gas station quickie marts and of course the never ending string of fast food restaurants along the highway. This summer cut unhealthy snacking off at the pass by packing your own healthy options. Dried or fresh fruit, unsalted nuts, kale chips, cut veggies and organic jerky are good options. Fill up on these healthy snacks between meals and you will end up eating less when presented with junk food.
Tip #5: Don’t Eat Fried Foods. Sure, fast food restaurants are convenient, with their low prices and quick service, however this convenience is not worth the additional pounds brought on by chips and fries. As you enjoy your vacation remember this: avoid fried foods. While this is always good advice to follow, it is even more important while traveling. Foods that are fried are packed with empty calories and the worst kind of fat. Also keep in mind that heartburn and indigestion are never fun…especially while on vacation!
