If you’ve ever lost weight then you know how hard it is to keep the pounds off.
Do you wonder why some people are able to keep weight off, while others put it right back on?
Here are seven ways to keep the weight off. (And if you have pounds to lose this will help you too.)
Secret #1: Keep Moving. If you’re serious about keeping the weight off, you need to be serious about exercise. Keep your activity level high, with challenging, consistent workouts. Your workouts should consist of both cardiovascular and strength training. While out of the gym make an effort to move as much as possible by taking the stairs, going for walks or jogs and participating in recreational activities.
I go to my local Fit Body Bootcamp at least 3 times each week for my workouts.
Secret #2: Be a Healthy Eater . Nope, you can’t go back to eating at the drive thru and expect to maintain your weight loss. Focus on these 3 aspects of healthy eating:
- Eat real food. Nothing packaged, nothing fake.
- Real food labels. You won’t know what you’re eating unless you read every single label.
- Cook healthy meals. Check out my blog RealHealthyRecipes.com for hundreds of healthy recipes.
Secret #3: Turn off the BoobTube. The average person watches a total of 35 hours of television each week. People who successfully maintain weight loss, on the other hand, watch only 7 hours or less. TV watching encourages unhealthy snacking and puts you in a sedentary position on the couch. Spend less time in front of the TV in order to enjoy longer lasting weight loss.
Secret #4: K.I.S.S. Keep It Simple Sweetheart. While it is important to keep a variety of fruits and vegetables in your diet, the foods you eat should be fairly simple. Create a list of basic whole foods: fruits, vegetables, lean meats, eggs, seeds and nuts. When you cut down on your options (goodbye grains, sugar, soy and artificial sweeteners) it becomes easier to stick to your plan, making weight loss effortless.
Secret #5: Track Progress . Your biggest fear is gaining back each and every pound, but don’t be afraid of your scale. Weigh yourself at least once a week to monitor any gains. If the number begins to climb then reduce your calories, assess the contents of your diet, and increase your exercise.
Secret #6: Eat for Fuel. Eating for emotional reasons is the number one reason that people gain weight. It’s vital that you view food as fuel, not as an answer to deeper emotional needs. When food is used as an emotional blanket, the pounds quickly add up. In order to keep your weight under control, you’re going to have to eliminate emotional eating. The good news is that once you eliminate grains, legumes, sugar, soy and artificial sweeteners from your life your body will naturally begin to treat food strictly as fuel, since you will be well nourished with stabilized blood sugar levels.
Secret #7: Forget Perfection. No one is perfect – and that even means you! There will be days when you eat more calories than you should. There will also be days when you don’t exercise or eat some junk food. Don’t let small slip-ups send you into a tailspin of all-or-nothing sabotage. Simply get back to your new, healthy lifestyle instead of backsliding into your old habits. Don’t be one of the many who return to a life of obesity. You worked hard to be where you are today and you deserve to keep it.
